What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple number that relates your weight to your height. It is widely used as a quick screening tool to classify adults into categories such as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.

BMI does not directly measure body fat, but for most adults it provides a reasonable indication of whether weight is in a range that is typically associated with lower health risk.

BMI categories for adults

Classification BMI range (kg/m²)
Underweight < 18.5
Normal weight 18.5 – 24.9
Overweight 25.0 – 29.9
Obesity (Class I) 30.0 – 34.9
Obesity (Class II) 35.0 – 39.9
Obesity (Class III) ≥ 40.0

Limitations of BMI

BMI uses only height and weight, so it cannot distinguish between fat and lean mass. Very muscular people may have a high BMI but low body fat, while older adults can have a normal BMI but higher body fat and lower muscle mass.

Health risks related to BMI

When BMI is above the healthy range

  • Higher risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
  • Increased strain on joints, which can contribute to osteoarthritis.
  • Greater likelihood of sleep apnea and some types of cancer.

When BMI is below the healthy range

  • Possible nutrient deficiencies and reduced immune function.
  • Increased risk of bone fractures due to low bone density.
  • In severe cases, underlying medical or eating disorders may be present.

If your BMI falls outside the healthy range, consider discussing it with a qualified healthcare professional who can evaluate your overall health, lifestyle, and body composition.

Formulas used in this calculator

Metric units

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)

US units

BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height² (in²)

BMI Prime

BMI Prime is your BMI divided by the upper limit of the healthy range (25 kg/m²). A prime value of 1.00 corresponds to a BMI of 25.

Ponderal Index

Ponderal Index (PI) is similar to BMI but uses height cubed instead of squared: PI = weight (kg) ÷ height³ (m³). It is sometimes used when comparing people who are very tall or very short.
